I co-requested a national sign-on letter of state legislators opposing proposed rollbacks of the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. More than 170 members of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL), representing 35 states, joined me and Rep. Pricey Harrison of North Carolina. I'm proud to be one of the two legislators who led this effort, and here's why.
NEPA has given state and local governments and other stakeholders a seat at the table for 50 years when projects involving the federal government impact the environment. That's more important in Nevada than perhaps anywhere else, where more than 80% of the land is federally owned.
Unfortunately the Trump Administration is trying to gut the law in a variety of ways. While the details are complex, the result is simple - we will have a reduced voice on projects that impact our public land, air, and water.
I'm glad that Attorney General Aaron Ford joined 17 other states in filing comments on behalf of Nevada as well. You can read the full state legislator comment letter here.
